“I Learned to be Fluent in Hebrew in One Year
Yes it’s true I learned to be fluent in Hebrew in one year – and so can you!
Hi!
My name is Joseph, and I am 11 years old.
My Father is the founder and Managing Director of “Street Hebrew”. I would like to tell you the story of how I learned to be fluent in Hebrew in just one year.
I moved to Israel when I was 8 years old, and was enrolled in a school in which the only language used daily was Hebrew.
For the first 3 months I had no friends and I was miserable as I could not communicate with anyone. Eventually, after about 6 months, I began to make friends, and then I realised how much of the language I actually knew!
How did I pick up Hebrew?
I ‘m not sure from where I picked it up, so I guess most of it came from the street, or everyday living, like going to the supermarket.
Suddenly, I found myself surrounded by friends. neighbours and teachers, who I could now talk with and I was as happy as a dog who just discovered a new bone!
it’s true that I was young and, therefore, I think that I was able to pick up the language more quickly than an adult, But I think that adults can still learn it quite quickly.
Hebrew is not difficult to learn
Hebrew is a very easy language, and I am confident that if you find a good teacher, for example, my father, then it won’t take long until you are fluent.
I was surprised, myself, how much Hebrew I could actually speak, and life has only moved uphill since then.
I wrote a short poem on speaking Hebrew, and here it is:
I want to speak it
But I only pick it up bit by bit
Who should I choose to teach me?
Hey! You never told me about him
And now my life is not so dim
It’s STREET HEBREW
(I know the poem wasn’t brilliant, but I’m not a professional poet!)
Well, I know that was not a long story, but the fact is I now speak Hebrew, and it was well worth the wait for the first 6 months.
