Learning Hebrew Words Through Word Association – Part 2
Word association is the most effective way
for learning Hebrew words
If you read part 1 of this article posted here back in December of last year you will already have an understanding of the power of using word association to memorize words in order to facilitate learning Hebrew. Indeed there are those who only learn their target language by associating the words they learn with something else. It is not only a useful tool for those who are learning Hebrew, it is also a very powerful way to remember literally anything.
Learning Hebrew and Visual Imagery
The whole point of the word association method for learning Hebrew, or indeed any other language is to attach some kind of far out, wacky visual image that springs to mind when you are in a situation where you need to recall a word fast. There are those who remember phone numbers or peoples names by using this method. It does not have to be a vivid and clear visual image that one needs to employ, indeed something vague in the back of the mind is also good. As long as, when you hear that word, you are triggered to remember it’s translation in your mother tongue, quickly and efficiently. Both speed and accuracy are important if you are learning Hebrew seriously.
People remember different things in different ways. For some memorizing lists is their preferred method, for others hearing words via sound is the most effective way and for other people seeing the word in print is the best way. Modern research is proving though that more and more people retain information properly when they associate the words they learn with visual images. We highlighted a number of these in part 1 of this article and are now going to share some more example below especially useful for those of you already learning Hebrew or for those who may wish be learning Hebrew in the future.
Learning Hebrew ? – Examples of word associations and how to do them yourself
Here are some examples of words in Hebrew along with their transliteration, translation and word association:
מסעדה – Miss ada – Restaurant – “I saw MISS ADA at the restaurant” – (imagine a friend or old teacher called Miss ADA)
אטריות – It ri-ot – Noodles – “The noodles my wife makes are so go – IT’S A RIOT!” (it-ri-ot)
בול – Bull - Stamp – “I once saw a stamp from Spain with a picture of a BULL”
מעניין – Me an Yen – Interesting – “I find Japanese currency very interesting, ME AND YEN get on well!”
פתרון – Pitta Ron – Solution – “If ever I want the solution to something I just put a PITTA (bread) ON – PITTARON”
One should bear in mind that these word associations and visual imageries aren’t always 100% perfect and accurate, they are meant to be more of a quick reminder or prompt. Nevertheless, if you go through the word lists that you are using for learning Hebrew you will be surprised by the amount of words you can fit into a word association/visual that speaks to you.
If you are able to be a little flexible and open your mind up to far out examples that you may previously not have thought about it will help you have more success on your quest of learning Hebrew.
