Street Hebrew Tip #9 – Asking for a Discount in Israel
Asking for a discount in Israel
Did you know that as well as being commonplace, asking for a discount in Israel is actually expected?
Although in the USA,UK one wouldn’t necessarily ask for a discount, it is an accepted cultural norm to do so in Israel, even in large retail chain stores.
One should be aware that an inflated price is often “worked in” to a product to make people feel that they are getting a reduction. Israeli salespeople are experts in this and should not be underestimated.
Here are a few tips that should help when trying to achieve the best price in Israel:
1. ALWAYS offer less than the asking price even if the product is marked as “on sale”
2. Request to speak to the supervisor or manager of the store. They often have the authority to offer a discount where the salesperson perhaps doesn’t
3. During negotiations, mention that you are an “Oleh Chadash” this sometimes helps in Israel
4. As many stores offer up to 12 installments without interest on credit cards for larger purchases, this can be used as a bargaining tool. Also, stores often give special discounts for cash
Finally, always be sure to check and double check the terms of any warranty as this information can sometimes be misleading. And remember; if you want any extra information be sure to ASK for it, as info isn’t necessarily offered unless asked for in Israel.
Useful words when asking for a discount in Israel:-
1. Hanacha – Discount
2. Hamocher – The Salesman
3. Menahell – Manager (supervisor)
4. Tashlumim – Installments (payments)
5. Masa oo matan – Negotiations
