A regular question from Israelis when they discover you don’t speak Hebrew.

And the question is put in a uniquely Israeli way; something between curiosity and accusatory. Of course, they accept the fact that you don’t yet speak Hebrew if you’ve only lived in Israel for a very short time.

But, with the passing of the months, their tolerance level diminishes in direct proportion to your time here.

So, how important is it to speak Hebrew?

At the very least, it’s essential that you speak Hebrew at the level of what we call “Street Hebrew”. Our speciality is getting you started on the basics that you need to survive on a daily basis.

Whether in the supermarket, the pharmacy the doctor’s office or the municipality, you must have the ability to speak Hebrew at some level.

Not every clerk or shop assistant speaks English or French or Spanish or whatever is your mother tongue.

Whilst it is true that those that do like to show off that fact, this will not help YOU to speak Hebrew.

Do you only need to speak Hebrew? What about reading and writing?

One step at a time! Of course you will need a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of learning the language if you want to integrate into Israeli society. But, a surprising number of people speak Hebrew without being able to read or write it!

That’s also true, for example, of Chinese – but we are not opening a branch of “Street Chinese” just yet!
